Fantastic adventures await Wendy and her brothers when Peter Pan, the hero of their stories, whisks them away to the magical world of Never Land.

Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)Let your dreams take flight with Walt Disney's original classic. PETER PAN soars to new heights in the magical 2-disc Platinum Edition DVD with an all-new digital restoration. Fantastic adventures await Wendy and her brothers when Peter Pan, the hero of their stories, whisks them away to the magical world of Never Land. After following Peter and his feisty sidekick Tinker Bell past "the second star to the right and straight on till morning," they explore the island and Peter's secret hideout with the rambunctious Lost Boys and leap into high-flying battles with swashbuckling pirates and the infamous Captain Hook! Bursting with fantasy, adventure, and pixie dust, this 2-disc Platinum Edition includes three all-new games in Camp Never Land, deleted scenes, a new discovery -- in which Walt Disney reveals why he made PETER PAN -- and much more.

On the DVD
The Platinum Edition of Peter Pan is absolutely packed with special features that include everything from Walt Disney's own words about why he made Peter Pan to interviews with animators, producers, historians, and film critics; games; activities; and songs. Like the 2002 Peter Pan Special Edition, the Platinum Edition offers an excellent commentary track hosted by Roy Disney that features interviews with some of Disney animation's "nine old men" like Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, historians, voice talent including Kathryn Beaumont, character models, and film critic Leonard Maltin. More "backstage" features include a 15-minute "making of" segment that looks at 1940's and 1950's animation technology and the challenges posed by transforming J. M. Barrrie's well-known story, stage play, and silent film into a believable animated film and an 8-1/2 minute featurette that focuses on Tinker Bell's character, its animation, and Margaret Kerry's experiences as a real-life model for the character. Most intriguing is a 7-1/2 minute featurette based on a 1953 magazine article that provides a rare chance to hear, in Walt Disney's own words, his thoughts, motivations, and ultimate goal of creating a children's world where adults and children could feel they belonged in Peter Pan. Equally fascinating is the 21-minute "The Peter Pan That Almost Was" segment detailing the developmental stages of the Peter Pan story and the multiple versions considered as Walt Disney and his crew strove to make the most powerful film possible. The 1952 featurette "The Peter Pan Story" explores multiple story telling mediums and details various stages of the animation process including drawing, layout, story boarding, animation, background art, and sound effects. Children ages 3 and older will delight in a host of appealing special features created just for them that include "Peter Pan's Virtual Flight" through London, two read alongs, songs with or without on-screen lyrics, deleted songs, music videos by Paige O'hara and T-Squad, Sudoku challenges with multiple difficulty levels, and interactive "Train to be a Lost Boy," "Tarrrget Practice," and "Tink's Fantasy Flight" games. Disney's Peter Pan is a truly classic, intergenerational film and the abundance of special features included in this Platinum Edition make it a must have for all ages. --Tami Horiuchi

Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas

For Kids And The Grown-Ups Who Never Grew Up5
Disney's Peter with the Lost BoysI simply love "Peter Pan." Disney did an outstanding job digitally processing this film to make its colors bright and vivid on the screen. The sound is wonderful as well. There are some really nice DVD extras included with this film but I have yet to tackle all of them. I'm too busy enjoying the actual film itself. It's a wonderful tale not only for youngsters, but kids of thirty (like me) or more years as well.

What's not to love about the film? It has a high seas adventure and a boy who never wants to grow up. It's got Tinkerbell who has become a force of her own as noted by her upcoming film. It's got Indians, pirates, and a crocodile with a clock in his belly. Of course, while most folks cheer on Peter Pan in his adventures, I'm sure most of us also long to see the wickedly fun Captain Hook have his day. In all, it's as close to the perfect adventure as you can get.

This film beckons for the days when we could play cowboys and Indians without the fear of offending anybody. It comes from a time when our imaginations were allowed to run free. It's childhood captured on celluloid, and it's worth every penny to purchase it.

Highly recommended to anyone who has children or is a kid at heart.

disney racism at its worst2
I am sorry to say that the 'new' version of Peter Pan does not leave out the terribly racist scene depicting Indians as redmen unable to speak in complete sentences, willing to make anyone a member of their tribe and hand out eagle feathers to anyone who comes around. I am surprised this flies now a days, but apparently people aren't bothered by racism when those offended are fewer in numbers. It would be interesting to see what the backlash would be if this were another minority group.
If you wish to raise tolerant children, pick another movie.

A delightful Walt Disney animated classic4

My young niece Sarah and nephew Caleb are terrified of Walt Disney's 1953 animated feature, PETER PAN---the crocodile, a band of pirates, Captain Hook with a hook hand, a rock slide that seems to momentarily kill Tinker Bell. The movie scared them so much in their younger days that they don't want to see it again, and neither does their mother. I, however, as a 56 year old film scholar find the film delightful--a boy who can fly and refuses to grow up leads the Darling kids over nighttime London and to Never-Land, where they all get to fight with indians and pirates. There is a Skull Rock, and a pirate cove, and a beautiful pirate ship. It is all just marvelous for adults. As for the crocodile, he is so stupid, boredly watching Hook fight with Peter until Hook falls into the water. And Hook is an irresistible pirate for kids of all ages. I love when Peter is on a mountain top pretending to be Hook and giving orders to dopey Smee in a boat below.

The glories of this animated film are that it is animated so the wires don't show in spectacular flying sequences, again highlighted by "You Can Fly" as the gang flies over 1904 nighttime London, plus the prologue bedroom and all over Never-Land. Hook has a real metal hook he deliciously screws on. Tinker Bell is a real, jealous fairy and not a spotlight on stage. And this is the one time Peter is played, satisfyingly and curiously, by a boy and not a grown woman, like Mary Martin on TV or Betty Bronson in a wonderful 1924 silent film version. Also unlike, say, the Martin version, you can have spectacular fight sequences and the Lost Boys and Darling kids tied up by the indians, not a lot of wires and painted backdrops. And the animation is magnificent, with deep colors and rich details, especially in this brand-new double disk Platinum Edition DVD, which also boasts an awesome 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theatre Mix soundtrack.

Disk one has the restored movie, but also a very informative audio commentary with Roy Disney, Leonard Maltin, John Canemaker, Kathryn "Wendy" Beaumont, the woman who modeled for Tinker Bell, and surviving animators. The late Hans Conreid did Captain Hook's voice to perfection, and Bobby Driscoll did Peter's.

Disk two has a good two hours of bonus material, including behind-the-scenes filmmaking documentaries, "Why I Wanted to Make PETER PAN" by Walt Disney from the archives, the history of making PETER PAN including storyboards for deleted scenes that go back to the late 1930's, an original never-before-seen opening to the movie, and a lovely deleted song that songwriter Richard Sherman and singer Paige O'Hara (Belle in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) have completed. If Disney had made the movie in the late 1930's, it would have been very dark and frightening. There are also games and activities galore for children and families, and a fun virtual flight with Peter Pan over London and Never-Land.

This PETER PAN has been painstakingly remastered and restored. The 1953 classic has never looked nor sounded this colorful and tuneful. It belongs in every family's video library, even if it has moments too scary for small children. They will grow into it, at which time it will be back in the Disney vaults on seven years moratorium; buy it now while you can.
