Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is a name of a Disney animated science fiction adventure show. It first aired in 2000 and features Buzz Lightyear, a character who first appeared in the feature film Toy Story. The premise of the show is that, within the Toy Story universe, "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" is actually the TV show which inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy line, and namely, the creation of the Buzz Lightyear toy, as shown by the intro sequence, done by Pixar especially for the series. In this 3D CGI sequence, Buzz Lightyear along with the other toys is in Andy's room getting ready to watch the show on TV, which follows to the rest of the intro, several clips from the traditionally animated show itself.
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins
The actual TV show follows the adventures of Buzz Lightyear and his Star Command cadet team as they struggle to keep justice in the galaxy, often thwarting the evil Emperor Zurg and other threats of the universe. The initial three episodes were originally released as "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins", a feature-length movie. The voice cast for the DTV-release had the original voice of Buzz, Tim Allen, but when the episodes were aired for television, Patrick Warburton, the series' regular voice of Buzz, redubbed all of Lightyear's dialogue to maintain continuity with the rest of the series. Many of the episodes were based or influenced by Star Trek: The Original Series, others were influenced by Star Wars.
Team Lightyear
Captain Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen in The Adventure Begins, Patrick Warburton in the actual series): Famed "Space Ranger" known for heroism and bravery. Like his Toy Story incarnation, Buzz's personality is somewhat tightly wound, and he's quite a stickler for procedure. He attended PS -19^3 as a primary school.
Princess Mira Nova (Nicole Sullivan): A rookie ranger and heir to the Tangean throne, with her people's ability to walk through walls (called "ghosting") and read minds. She seems to have the most common sense of the group, and can at times be something of a smart-mouth.
Booster Sinclair Munchapper (Stephen Furst): A dinosaur-like former janitor from the agricultural planet of Jo-ad (a play on the name of the Joad family, from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath), with a big appetite and lots of muscle power. Big-hearted, but somewhat simple-minded and not particularly brave -- but he worships and is in awe of Buzz Lightyear.
XR (Larry Miller and Neil Flynn): A short robot with many pop-out gadgets (like R2-D2), who can store objects in his chest cavity (like Bender). XR stands for experimental ranger, though he holds to the belief that it stands for experimental robot. He's somewhat neurotic, and gets blown up on nearly every mission he goes on. However, he can be rebuilt provided all of his parts are salvaged.
42 (Joy Behar): Usually the name of Buzz Lightyear's ship, it gained A.I. from one of the encounters with the Valkyran Raiders and a new energy projector device inserted on the ship by the LGMs. 42 doesn't like what Buzz says about her and usually controls the ship herself. XR developed a crush on her. When the Valkyran Raiders were thwarted, 42's conscious was placed into a robot body and she now helps the LGMs.
