Community joins together to find bone marrow for child in need
Morris, NJ (March
22,2009) - A bone marrow drive will be helpd on March 22, 2009 in Parsippany, NJ for young Arya. is
happening in Morris, New Jersey! Parsippany, NJ - Arya, a spirited 11-year-old boy, has been fighting leukemia for three years. Like any 5th grader, Arya loves sports, especially Tae Kwan Do and football. He is also a talented chef and enjoys preparing dishes from his specially created menus for friends and family. Now, desperately ill and frequently hospitalized for radiation and chemotherapy, Arya has little stamina for his favorite activities. A Bone Marrow Transplant is Arya’s only chance for survival. And like Arya, there are 10,000 other patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. Members of Arya’s local community and his network of family and friends have partnered with DKMS, the world’s largest Bone Marrow Donor Center, to hold a Bone Marrow Donor Drive on Sunday, March 22 from 11:00am until 4:00pm at the Parsipanny P.A.L, Parsipanny, New Jersey. The testing process is simple - a quick self-administered cheek swab is all that is needed to identify a potential donor. If matched with Arya or another patient, the donation process is out-patient, nearly painless and recovery immediate. Prospective donors must be in good health, aged 18 to 55. When a person is identified as a match for a patient, blood stem cells are collected in one of two ways – both outpatient procedures. Approximately 70 – 80 percent of collections are performed by apheresis, where the donor’s blood is removed from one arm, passed through a machine that separates out the cells used in transplant and returned through the other arm. Twenty to 30 percent of the time, doctors collect cells with a special needle, from the pelvic bone where a small amount of marrow is extracted. This procedure is done under anesthesia so the donor does not experience pain during the collection process. Currently, 10,000 blood cancer patients need a bone marrow transplant, but only 3,000 will receive one. Registering to become a bone marrow donor is quick and easy. It consists of completing a registration form and swabbing your cheeks. Understand your commitment, find out if you are eligible to register as a potential life-saving bone marrow donor and learn about the donation process. As a non-profit organization, DKMS relies on the generosity of individuals to help finance the $65 cost DKMS pays to tissue type each bone marrow donor who registers. Donations are voluntary. Donate today! Every dollar counts! 100% of your donation will be used to register donors and add them on the National Registry. ### About DKMS DKMS was founded in Germany in 1991 by Peter Harf and Professor Dr. Gerhard Ehninger, after Peter lost his wife, Mechtild, to acute leukemia. Today, DKMS is the world’s largest and most successful bone marrow donor center with over 1.8 million registered donors. Since its founding, DKMS has facilitated more than 16,000 transplants. The mission of DKMS is to give every blood cancer patient a second chance at life. We work with patients and their families to organize bone marrow donors drive to recruit donors from every race and ethnicity. We inspire hope and healing by matching our donors with patients around the world in need of a bone marrow transplant. DKMS Americas is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization. For more information about DKMS and to learn more about registering as a bone marrow donor, please visit www.dkmsamericas.org. This event
will take place in Morris County on March
22,2009 at Parsipanny P.A.L, 33 Baldwin Road, Parsippany.
