An Introduction to Native Plants for the Home Gardener

happening in Somerset, New Jersey! Earth Day is this week! The health of our natural landscapes depends on maintaining a diverse population of plants native to the local area. In New Jersey, as well as in most of the developed areas of the world, non-native invasive plants are escaping from cultivation or being accidentally introduced in record numbers and adversely impacting local environments. At Duke Farms, a substantial effort is underway to remove invasive non-native plants. On this walk through a portion of the property, Michael Pollock, N.J.Audubon Society teacher-naturalist and restoration specialist, will examine the importance of native plants and address ways in which the home gardener can become more aware of this issue and help prevent the adverse impact of invasive plants. Aquarius: Sea Water Salinity and Earth's Changing Environment

happening in Bergen, New Jersey! 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Nearly everyone knows that seawater is salty but most are unaware that salinity -- the concentration of dissolved salts in water -- is not measured by satellite. In response, NASA is developing a pioneering mission to make Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observations over the global ice-free oceans. After its 2010 launch, Aquarius will deliver 150-kilometer resolution SSS maps over its 3-year mission lifetime. Learn how NASA plans to track the Sea Surface Salinity and improve our understanding of our vast oceans. Presented by NASA/JPL Ambassador and Meadowlands Astronomy Educator Laura Venner. $5/person; $3/members. Pre-registration required. Attendance limited to 50 participants. Atlantic City Aquarium Super Saturday - Feed the Fish! Wild Animal Show!

01,2008) - Super Saturday - Feed the Fish! Wild Animal Show! is
happening in Atlantic, New Jersey! Saturday at the Atlantic City Aquarium - a whole day of fun! It’s a Super Saturday Celebration each week at the Atlantic City Aquarium located at the Historic Gardner’s Basin at the northernmost part of Atlantic City. The venue hosts a series of interactive events for all members of the family. Activities start with the Live Diver Feeding Show at 11 a.m. Visitors canwatch, and interact with, a diver in scuba gear as he or she hand feeds the stingrays and sharks inside the 25,000 gallon "Fish of the Mid-Atlantic" tank. At 12 noon, it’s lunchtime for the baby stingrays and bamboo sharks, one of the Aquarium’s newest exhibits. Visitors can hand feed these species by purchasing bags of food. The Aquarium’s new Exotic Animal Show is at 2 p.m. each Saturday. The show features exotic animals from around the globe, from the largest species of scorpion to the softest furred mammal in the world. Not only will visitors learn interesting facts, but they’ll get to touch many of the animals duringthe presentation. At 3 p.m., it’s snack time again for the baby stingrays and bamboo sharks. Bags of food are $2 (or $1 for members). The Atlantic City Aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children ages 4-12. Children under three are free. Located in Atlantic City’s Historic Gardner's Basin, the Atlantic City Aquarium offers a fun and educational look into more than 100 varieties of fish and marine animals.
