RECORD-SETTING RACE BOAT TAKES ATLANTIC CITY POWER BOAT SHOW BY STORM
Atlantic, NJ (February
06,2008) - MISS GEICO, AN OFFSHORE CATAMARAN REACHES SPEEDS 180 MPH is
happening in Atlantic, New Jersey! ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – January 2008 – No race boat has ever earned a coveted spot in the American Power Boat Association’s legendary Hall of Champions. But that may change when this record-setting offshore catamaran finally hits the dry docks. If your family has a need for speed, than you need to experience the 29th Annual Atlantic City International Power Boat Show - February 6 -10, 2008. The 40-foot, turbine-powered Miss GEICO took the offshore racing scene by storm in the spring of 2006 and proceeded to demolish record after record and awe those unfortunate enough to race against her. “I don’t think the other big boats on the circuit knew what to expect,” said driver Marc Granet. “Nobody had ever seen anything like it.” In its inaugural season, the Platinum cat dominated all three major racing tours – the Offshore Super Series, Super Boat International and the Offshore Performance Association – capturing three world championships and quickly becoming the crowd favorite from the sun-drenched waters of Miami to the wind-swept bays of the Great Lakes. “When we hit 180 mph, people couldn’t believe it,” Granet recalled. “Speeds that high were unheard of in offshore racing.” Miss GEICO returned the following year to set a new speed record from in Annapolis to Baltimore, covering the rough water course in 14 minutes and 7 seconds. Team owner John Haggin, a visionary when it comes to new race technology, urged his crew to chip away at the other speed marks. In October of 2007, Miss GEICO shattered another “untouchable” milestone when it hit an average top speed of 188.26 mph on the Mississippi River near Chattanooga, Tenn. The team had previously been crowned King of the Delta at a Pacific Offshore race near San Francisco when hit pegged the mark at 164 mph after a standing-still start. Nobody thought it possible, but Miss GEICO followed up with another blistering performance at the Lake of the Ozarks Shoot Out, where the fastest boats in the world come to play, and hit the unbelievable top speed of 175 mph. But speed is relative. In the rough and tumble world of offshore racing, it is not always the quickest boat that wins. “The best way to characterize it is a war of attrition,” said Scotty Begovich, Miss GEICO’s throttleman. “You have to be there at the finish line to win. We have got the scars to prove it.” Other race boats might have fancier paint jobs, but they haven’t seen the kind of action that Miss GEICO. Powered by twin, 1500 HP refurbished helicopter engines Miss GEICO displays its battle wounds like a badge of honor. With two titles under her belt, she should retire and become a pleasure boat. “Not a chance,” Granet said. “She still has plenty of races left in her.” Her sister ships – a 44-foot MTI capable of “race” speeds in excess of 190 mph and a soon to be delivered 50-foot Mystic fabled to run well over 200 mph – will likely carry on the legend in years to come. “But don’t count out this boat,” Granet said. “There’s never been anything like her.
