Movie Mondays: Bobby Darin in "Captain Newman, M.D."
Ocean, NJ (November
16,2009) - At Georgian Court University is
happening in Ocean, New Jersey! One of the most popular rock-and-roll teen idols of the late 1950s and early 1960s, Bobby Darin was a premier song stylist. His career took off in 1958 when he wrote and recorded “Splish Splash,” and continued with other hits such as “Dream Lover,” “Mack the Knife,” and “Beyond the Sea.” Moving into the pop mainstream and nightclub circuit, his astounding career continued almost unabated through the 1960s. In Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), Captain Josiah J. Newman (Gregory Peck) is head of the neuropsychiatric section at a southwestern Army air base during World War II. Assisting him are Lieutenant Francie Corum (Angie Dickinson), a nurse with whom he has an affair, and Corporal Jackson Leibowitz (Tony Curtis), the chief orderly, who, although untrained in medical arts, has an innate understanding of human behavior. Among his patients is Corporal Jim Tompkins (Darin), a shell-shocked soldier who considers himself a coward for failing to rescue a friend from a burning plane, even though he has been decorated for his bravery in 34 missions. Darin was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role.
